EDUROB project piloting tests with robots.

In the same morning, School of Robotics will be carrying out some piloting tests using robotics kit with disables students. This tests are carried out in the frame of EDUROB European project /Erasmus). EDUROB is a research project aiming to demonstrate that cognitive development can be enhanced by means of mediated learning using robots. EDUROB proposes an intervention model that aims to drive students’ cognitive processes while addressing other transferable & social skills, making use of the advantages offered by robotics and its engaging and immersive nature.
The EDUROB team will work with stakeholders in the project countries (Bulgaria, Italy, Lithuania, Turkey, Poland and the UK) to develop a set of interventions utilising robots to enhance the learning of students with learning disabilities. This will involve scoping the needs of the teachers, and the students and the subjects that they are trying to teach and learn. Based on the results of this research, robotic teaching tools and scenarios will be developed and tested by way of pilot studies in each of the countries.

Presentation of the new book by Elena Parodi: Robotics and Creativity for young technofans. It is a a "cook book" about how to build a robot using several kind of material.
Cosa accade quando la robotica si mescola alla creatività per dare vita a tante ricette da fare a casa e a scuola? Italmaker is a noprofit society committed to educate young people to a responsabile use of ICT technology and robotics. This event - organized in collaboration with Robotics-3D (Paolo Cirinei) - offers free demos and lab to kids and teens. Kids and teens will have to assemble robot JIMU and program it with Scratch.
Italmaker associazione no-profit che si occupa di formazione per bambini (6-14) in ambito elettronica, coding e robotica.
Il nostro scopo è educare i bambini ad un uso consapevole della tecnologia, organizziamo corsi e workshop nella nostra sede e presso scuole private e pubbliche.
Le nostre lezioni sono studiate in modo da coinvolgere i bambini in modo collaborativo, creativo e divertente.
A breve apriremo una piccola fablab didattica nei pressi di Tor Vergata in modo da coinvolgere anche gli adulti e l'università, dove già organizziamo l'evento "italmaker show" (www,italmakershow.it) in cui invitiamo gratuitamente le scuole a partecipare a diversi laboratori e sarà fatto anche per il prossimo anno (marzo 2017).
Siamo partner di Robotics-3D (Paolo Cirinei).
L'evento si svolgerà domenica 27 novembre presso il centro commerciale "LE TORRI" ( via Amico Aspertini) lo scopo dell'evento sarà presentare la robotica a tutti! in particolare organizzeremo dei laboratori per bambini da 8 a 14 anni in cui dovranno montare dei robot JIMU per poi programmarli attraverso un ambiente a blocchi simile a "scratch" direttamente con il tablet.
Con l'occasione presenteremo i nostri prodotti realizzati in partnership con robotics-3d (italrobot.it)

Working hard for the First Lego League: Three Chers for Cassini team!

The FLL team of Liceo Cassini is working hard and this days will be preparing the Sientifici Project that they will have to submit at the Semi final, in Genova, next year. The basis of FLL is a robotics tournament in a cheerful atmosphere, where kids and youngsters need to solve a tricky "mission" with the help of a robot. The kids are researching a given topic within a team, they are planning programming and testing an autonomous robot to solve the mission. The FLL Teams take the opportunity to experience all steps of a real product development process: solving a problem under time pressure with insufficient resources and unknown competitors. FLL is a small microcosmos of real business life in all its respects.

Let's build and program a driverless car at school!

All the students of the Comprehensive School Soleri (around 700) will be involved in three extraordinary robotics days.
Teachers and students will be using robotics kits (Lego Wedo e i robot nxt), to start a journey in our humans senses, and of those of some animals. They will be discovering how animals use their sense, also about some animal senses we humans do not have. They will compare human senses, animal senses, and robots sensors.
Could robots sobstitute human senses, when needed? the driverless cars are an example of it.
Teachers ans students will build a deriverless car. All the students will be involved in this marathon, a kind of roboticon, from 5 to 14 years old, everyone according to his or her competences.

Road to the future!
The road to the future passes also, and above all, through Robotics.
In the last five years more than in any previous period, new possibilities for the use of robots have emerged. Not only can service robots perform heavy industry operations or highly repetitive tasks, but they can also be assigned everyday tasks we used to carry out ourselves.
Such technology has also entered the medical field with rehabilitation tasks, certain types of medical examinations and assistance in delicate operations. From interactive games where you can challenge a real robot to the endless applications of Arduino kits and the robotic bartenders able to mix perfect cocktails, robots have satisfied the expectations even in the entertainment field.
Current uses, future developments in the field, the labour market and the necessary skills to deal with a professional sector where technology constantly evolves are the issues that will be discussed in the conference. This is addressed mainly to young people attending both high school and university programs in technical fields.

Workshop to prepare the Calendar and content of the Erasmus + project of wgich Istitiuto Montale and the School of Robotics are partners.
Summary of the project. Robotics, microcontroller programming, creating applications are very rapidly developing areas and teachers constantly need to increase their knowledge and present the latest trends to their students. Only a few years ago, a market for programing mobile devices did not exist (as was the case of devices for installing advanced applications). Nowadays mobile application programers are professionals sought for on the IT market. A similar situation takes place in the case of robots - the fast progress requires constant training and learning. Our project concentrates on students' as well as teachers' competence. All trainings offered by the partners are from outside of our schools' curriculum. The topics of several courses are not taught in schools which will organize the courses - they are a result of teachers' individual development and extracurricular activities for the most interested students whose skills reach far beyond the curriculum. Participation in trainings will allow theachers to familiarize themselves with new working tools, programing languages and environments. Students are in a similar situation, including those most active - participation in the project will increase their development even more. Thanks to the project both target groups will gain new competence and students will achieve a better status on the professional market. Teachers, through trainings, will be able to pass their knowledge and new tools to other groups of students during their classes.
We want products of our cooperation to be free of charge and available to everyone. That is why we will make our multilingual video course of Swift programming available as Open Educational Resource. 5 language versions will make access to it easier for people using English, Turkish, Italian, Portugese and Polish. Although availability of materials in English is high, good quality educational materials in other languages are scarce. The gap shall be filled by our course.

Three Extraordinary Robotics Days!

All the students of the Comprehensive School Soleri (around 700) will be involved in three extraordinary robotics days.
Teachers and students will be using robotics kits (Lego Wedo e i robot nxt), to start a journey in our humans senses, and of those of some animals. They will be discovering how animals use their sense, also about some animal senses we humans do not have. They will compare human senses, animal senses, and robots sensors.
Could robots sobstitute human senses, when needed? the driverless cars are an example of it.
Teachers ans students will build a deriverless car. All the students will be involved in this marathon, a kind of roboticon, from 5 to 14 years old, everyone according to his or her competences.

NAOChallenge 2017 kick off at High School Tassinari
Show details
Teachers Paolo Borrelli and Mosca Anna will present to their students the basic principles of robotics. In particular they will focus on the presentation of the humanoid robot NAO. The students will be well prepared to participate in the NAO Challenge.
It will be presented a mounting kit of a "Smart Car Robot" with Arduino that students will learn how to build and program.


Target audience
At the meeting, there will be students and teachers.
Especially students of the third year of secondary school, computing, highly motivated and interested.
The group will be composed of both those who already know and studied robotics, both by those who begins now.
Among the participants there will be the guys who will participate in the next NAO Challenge 2017.

The Fondazione Mondo Digitale (FMD) promotes an entire week dedicated to robotics. Every mornings during the week at the Robotics Center of InnovationGym, FMD will host various educational robotics laboratories for schools. Students will use different kits to build and programme simple robotics models that will allow them to experience manual didactic activities, work in groups, identify alternative solutions and learn how to programme a real prototype.
During the week end in the afternoon some young engineers will build rescue robots, programme them and practice for the Rescue Category in order to participate to RomeCup2017 event. T

SlideWiki European project, Transnational Meeting

A major obstacle to increase the efficiency, effectiveness and quality of education in Europe is the lack of widely available, accessible, multilingual, timely, engaging and high-quality educational material (i.e. OpenCourseWare). The creation of comprehensive OpenCourseWare (OCW) is tedious, time-consuming and expensive with the effect that often courseware employed by teachers, instructors and professors is incomplete, outdated, inaccessible to those with disabilities and dull.
With the open-source SlideWiki platform (available at SlideWiki.org) the effort of the creation, translation and evolution of highly-structured remixable OCW can be widely shared (i.e. crowdsourced).
Similarly to Wikipedia for encyclopaedic content, SlideWiki allows to collaboratively create comprehensive OCW (curricula, slide presentations, self-assessment tests, illustrations etc.) online in a crowdsourcing manner to:
semi-automatically translate this content into more than 50 different languages and
improve the translations in a collaborative manner and
to support engagement and social networking of educators and learners around that content.

Educational Robotics for Inclusion. EDUROB for a Pedagogy for Disabled Students

EDUROB is a research project aiming to demonstrate that cognitive development can be enhanced by means of mediated learning using robots. EDUROB proposes an intervention model that aims to drive students’ cognitive processes while addressing other transferable & social skills, making use of the advantages offered by robotics and its engaging and immersive nature. The EDUROB team will work with stakeholders in the project countries (Bulgaria, Italy, Lithuania, Turkey, Poland and the UK) to develop a set of interventions utilising robots to enhance the learning of students with learning disabilities. This will involve scoping the needs of the teachers, and the students and the subjects that they are trying to teach and learn. Based on the results of this research, robotic teaching tools and scenarios will be developed and tested by way of pilot studies in each of the countries.

This extraordinary exhibit displays some artistic robots in honor of the Renaissance Italian engineer Janello Torriani. Experienced blacksmith, watchmaker of universal fame, excellent hydraulic engineer, court mathematician and renowned inventor, he was famous in life well beyond his own city walls. He built the most complex machines of the sixteenth century which will finally be exhibited, centuries later.
One robot will be guiding you throughout the exhibit. How to set up a vertical curriculum that imply robotics education

For several years the educational robotics has become part of the teaching methods that can support learning and encourage the development of multiple skills. A growing number of schools are using educational robotics and computational thinking, but the biggest challenge for teachers is to design the use of robots within the school curriculum. Blue-Bot, Dash & Dot, LEGO Education WeDo and LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 will be the mediators useful to talk about learning objectives, targets and categories of skills and provide insights to design and manage scenarios using computational and educational robotics thought as useful tools to foster the inclusion, interest in STEM subjects and the development of skills in the vertical curriculum from kindergarten to secondary school.

A lab based on Cubetto, the smart toys developed to introduce programming in early childhood.
Cubetto, it is the first step in the discovery of programming. It's a smiling programmable wooden robot through a tangible programming language that does not use screens, and letters. Playing with Cubetto children can learn the basics of programming and computational thinking before you even know how to read or write.

Computer programs are not simply the language that is used to tell the gadgets and digital devices around us what to do. Someone, somewhere has started defining a sequence of logical steps that determine their behavior.
Thinking about the world around us in the same way that we teach children to think in the world Cubetto, enables to understand what and 'the code to use with machines. Gives us the confidence to try, break the rules, and shaping our environment playing.

RoboESL for preventing Early School Leaving

A workshop for teachers and parents devoted to present the results of one year of activity of RoboeESL European Project (Erasmus +).
Why RoboESL? Recent studies show that school failure may lead to school disengagement and early school leaving. The problem of school failure and early school leaving (ESL) challenges European educational systems as well as European economies. Many students who fail in school or are at risk of early school describe the school curriculum and the existing teaching practices as discouraging factors towards staying at school. These students often claim they are rarely offered with opportunities to develop their creativity, to work on hands-on activities and to learn practical skills useful in their life.

During last decade studies assure that educational robotics (ER) can provide learning experiences that promote children’s creative thinking, collaborative spirit, and problem solving skills – the essential skills necessary in the workplace of the 21st century. Educational Robotics is a modern learning practice that draws upon the conception of Constructivism (Piaget) and Constructionism (Papert) and project-based learning. ER emerges as a unique tool that creates an attractive learning environment that engages students in hands-on and enjoyable learning activities.
RoboESL uses ER to motivate students at risk of school failure and disengagement towards staying at school and improving their performance.

La robotica sarà protagonista all’Immaginario Scientifico domenica 13 novembre: nell’ambito dell’iniziativa Arte/Scienza/Tecnologia. La Robotica, organizzata dal Gruppo 78. International Contemporary Art di Trieste, il museo ospita per il secondo anno una serie di eventi legati al tema della robotica, spaziando anche su esperienze “cross-mediali” e attinenti al connubio arte/scienza. Durante l’orario di apertura (10.00-18.00) sono in programma laboratori per famiglie e per ragazzi, mentre dalle 18.00 il museo ospita la Rassegna Screening Festival / Art Based Research, con proiezioni di video e una performance artistica.
Laboratori “Robotizziamoci”
Per coinvolgere nel mondo della robotica il pubblico di diverse età, alle ore 11.00 e alle 15.00 sono in programma laboratori di “tinkering“: come in un fornito garage ricco di materiali di ogni genere, i partecipanti, che lavoreranno in gruppi, avranno a disposizione oggetti di riciclo, piccoli motori elettrici, batterie e strumenti di vario genere, che potranno utilizzare a piacimento per costruire robot realmente funzionanti. L’obiettivo è quello di provare, sperimentare, ragionare, discutere insieme e giungere a conclusioni, in un clima di condivisione e cooperazione.

2016 marks the tenth year anniversary of the firsts robot assisted surgical acitivities here at IEO.
After ten years of hard work, studies, reasearch and progress the Institutes decided to celebrate this mark with a special exhibition and opening event.

Oncological Robotic Surgery: a IEO exhibition

«As soon as I saw the tangible possibility that robotic surgery could vastly improve our chances of fighting cancer I thought, without any hesitation, that robot assisted procedures should have been our main direction of technological evolution".

These are the words of IEO founder Professor Umberto Veronesi, who since the beginning of IEO clinical activities has believed that the fight against cancer should walk beside the one towards a minimal invasive approach to a cure.

IEO is the only euopean comprehensive cancer center in which all the clinical Programs take advantage of robot assisted surgery techniques .

During the tenth year anniversary since the first robotic procedure in IEO the Institute would like to tell you the story of how oncological Robotic Surgery started, how it evolved along with the technology progress and how we imagine it will and could be in the next future.

In order to do so IEO established a dedicated exhibition in its Building 1 starting from November 8th to November 30th.

The exhibition, free and open to the public, aims to tell the story and the future of robot assisted surgery procedure in Oncology in order to underline its importance in treating many complicated an aggressive disease, such cancer, with a minimal invasiva approach that benefits the patients and the effectiveness of the treatment.
